Hydraulics II, Advanced Hydraulics Course

The course is a continuation of the Basic Hydraulics Course (Hydraulics I) and provides participants with a better understanding of complex hydraulic diagrams, more comprehensive system knowledge, and an introduction to more advanced combined components. Participants will gain increased knowledge of pump control, flow rate, and pressure and power losses in hydraulic systems.

Technical Information

A course compendium and exercise booklet will be distributed during the course. Necessary protective equipment and workwear are available.

The goal

Upon completion of the course, participants will have gained an enhanced understanding of the construction and function of hydraulic systems. They will have deepened their knowledge of basic fluid mechanics, calculations of pressure, flow rate, and power, as well as the function and application of central hydraulic components. Participants will also have received training in reading and interpreting more complex hydraulic schematics, alongside increased competence in system understanding, operation, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of hydraulic installations.

The target group

Operations and maintenance personnel, mechanics, automation technicians, electricians, etc., with some experience in hydraulics.

The topics covered

The course consists of theory and practical exercises in the hydraulics lab covering the following topics:

Component and System Understanding:

  • Pumps and motors
  • Cylinders
  • Accumulators
  • Pressure valves
  • Directional control valves

Load Sensing Pump Control (LS):

  • Manifold-mounted valves (block-mounted)
  • LS control of pumps
  • LS control of flow rate

Load Holding and Safety:

  • Check valves
  • Logic elements
  • Load holding valves (counterbalance valves)

Flow Control:

  • Proportional valves
  • Throttle valves
  • Flow regulators

Accumulators:

  • Piston, bladder, and diaphragm accumulators
  • Inspection and calculation of pre-charge pressure

Energy Loss in Hydraulic Systems:

  • Pressure loss, power loss, and speed loss
  • Reducing power loss and optimization of hydraulic systems

Mobile Hydraulics (Hydraulic Systems on Vehicles):

  • Open and closed circuits
  • Traditional pumps with tank and return lines
  • Closed-loop hydraulic circuits
  • Ring main systems

System Understanding:

  • Training in schematic reading, component, and system understanding in larger and more complex installations

Prerequisites for an optimally functioning hydraulic system, hazards, and HSE.

The course concludes with a written exam to document achieved competence.
