Hydraulics III – Proportional Hydraulics

The course is intended for those who will maintain and operate hydraulic lifting equipment such as cranes and winches, as well as other equipment with proportional hydraulics. It provides a solid introduction to components and systems using proportional hydraulic equipment. You will learn to understand signals from the control system, the function of proportional valves, and how to adjust signals to ensure that the proportional valves and the entire hydraulic system operate as intended.

The course consists of theory and practical exercises in the hydraulics lab covering the following topics:

Proportional Valves:

  • Direct-operated and pilot-operated directional valves
  • Servo valves
  • Pressure valves
  • Flow control valves
  • Pump and motor controls
  • The function of proportional valves within the hydraulic system

Proportional Control Systems:

  • Power supply
  • Valve amplifier modules
  • Analog and digital adjustment options
  • PID controllers

Feedback Control Systems or Closed-Loop Control Systems:

  • Control principles
  • Block diagrams
  • Issues and troubleshooting
  • Position and speed
  • Force, pressure, and torque

Basic Electrical Principles:

  • Voltage
  • Current
  • Coils
  • Ohm's Law
  • Electrical components (resistors, potentiometers, capacitors, coils/inductors, diodes, transistors)
  • Electrical symbols combined into a system

System Understanding:

  • Prerequisites for optimal function of hydraulic installations
  • HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment)

The course concludes with a written exam to document achieved competence.
