Condition Monitoring of Industrial Machinery and Equipment

Learn how to identify critical Key Performance Indicators and how to use sensors in machines and systems for effective condition monitoring. You will also receive training in how to visually present collected data using Grafana dashboards. Practical exercises are carried out using our own hydraulic system and pump and valve station for hands-on experience in condition monitoring.

The goal

After completing the course, participants will have:

  • Gained an introduction to reading and interpreting P&ID diagrams
  • Acquired knowledge of sensor types and how they function
  • Been introduced to methods for collecting measurement data from different systems, and organizing and storing it with a focus on time-series databases
  • Developed an understanding of how to identify critical components in a facility to better monitor condition
  • Acquired the skills to build dashboards in Grafana for monitoring various machines and equipment

The target group

Operations and maintenance personnel, mechanics, automation technicians, electricians, and related professions.

The topics covered

The course consists of both theoretical and practical training in condition monitoring of industrial machinery and equipment such as hydraulic systems, process valves, pumps, and more.

System Design and Schematic Development:

  • P&ID interpretation and development
  • Sensor tagging and naming conventions
  • Defining and structuring system hierarchies

Data Acquisition:

  • Sensor types and measurement ranges
  • Data transmission methods
  • Industrial communication protocols such as OPC UA and MQTT

Design and Implementation of Condition Monitoring Systems:

  • Identifying correlations and strategically important measurement points in pump and valve stations and hydraulic systems
  • Developing condition monitoring concepts for hydraulic systems
  • Developing condition monitoring concepts for pump and valve stations
  • Creating dashboards in Grafana for hydraulic systems
  • Creating dashboards in Grafana for pump and valve stations

Final Group Assignment:

  • Design and implement an effective condition monitoring system

The course concludes with a written assessment to document achieved competence.
