Enhance your preparedness and understanding of lithium-ion battery fires with OComp’s hands-on course. This course includes unique, realistic demonstrations of lithium-ion battery fires, including a thermal runaway demonstration, which gives participants a deeper insight into how such incidents can occur and be managed.
What will you learn?
The course covers:
- Prevention, function, and operation of lithium-ion battery systems on board ships.
- Risks and emergency response measures for lithium-ion battery fires.
- Hands-on experience with handling lithium-ion fires, including extinguishing methods and emergency response plans.

Practical demonstrations, such as this one where a lithium-ion battery has been set on fire, provide students with a solid understanding of the risks and fact-based knowledge that can be extremely useful when encountering situations involving lithium-ion batteries.
This course complies with the Norwegian Maritime Authority’s Circular 7-23—Guidance on Training Requirements for Chemical Energy Storage Systems on Board Norwegian Ships. You can read the circular here:Norwegian Maritime Authority Circular 7-23. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a course certificate that meets the requirements of the circular.

Participants have included personnel from Norway’s largest shipping companies, as well as some of the world’s largest international shipping companies, in addition to fire departments along Norway’s entire coastline.
Practical information
The course lasts one day and combines theory with practical exercises. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate of completion documenting training in accordance with the Norwegian Maritime Authority’s requirements. Prior to the course, participants will have access to an e-learning module that provides a basic introduction to the subject.
