Get Your D6 Certificate with OComp – Become a Qualified Captain

Effective January 1, 2024, the Norwegian Maritime Authority will require a Certificate of Competency (D6) for captains of commercial vessels between 8 and 24 meters in length operating in the small coastal shipping area.

A Class 6 Deck Officer Certificate of Competency entitles the holder to serve on ships with a gross tonnage of less than 500 in the small coastal shipping zone, excluding passenger ships and fishing vessels, such as:

- captain of vessels between 8 and 15 meters (after meeting the requirements for seagoing service and age, you will receive a certificate for vessels between 15 and 24 meters)

- serve as the officer in charge of the watch or deck officer on vessels under 24 meters

(Section 23a. Certificate of Competency for Deck Officer, Class 6)

Lifting Operations – Anchor Handling & Towing

Do you use a crane on board?

If you are the captain of a vessel that performs lifting operations, participates in anchor handling, or engages in towing, you must also complete the courses “Lifting Operations” and “Anchor Handling & Towing.”

These are mandatory additional qualifications for the D6 certificate pursuant to Section 59a of the Regulations on Qualifications and Certificates for Seafarers. This requirement applies to the ship’s captain (not necessarily the “crane operator”).

We can arrange for you to take these courses at the same time as you complete your D6 course with us.
